Sabyasachi Mukherjee
The 31 year old designer, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, is a well-known name in the Indian Fashion Industry. He started as selling junk jewelry on the roadside shops in Kolkata and today he marks the presence of Indian Fashion at Milan. He graduated from NIFT, Kolkata in 1999 and won three outstanding awards for designing from the institute - The Best Design collection, the Ritu Kumar award for excellence in design and the Viewers Choice award at the NIFT Confluence. He then started his eponymous label after four months and soon he was retailing at all the major stores all across India. IN 2002, his debut collection at Lakme India Fashion Week brought him kudos and accolades from all corners of the Indian fashion industry. He followed his dreams of studying fashion which were completely anew to his family and people in the home town. His dreams later bagged him the most coveted award of Indian Fashion – ‘Most Outstanding Designer of India’ by Times of India. He believes in doing his own things like personalized imperfection of the human hand. His inspirations are driven from the common clothes of prostitutes, gypsies, deserts and antique textiles. His foray into Bollywood marked an impression when Sanjay Leela Bhansali commissioned his expertise for his film “Black” featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee. He retains his originality in his cosmopolitan clothing, after all, your roots make you unique, he says. News for Sabyasachi Mukherjee:
